Reviving Cotton in Sindh: SAWiE’s Mission to Empower Farmers

SAWIE and the Sindh Agriculture Department organized “The Revival of Cotton in Sindh seminar” at Nara Farm, Saleh Pat, on February 2, 2025. Over 400 farmers alongside officials from the Sindh government, agricultural experts, researchers, cotton industry representatives, banks, agricultural input providers, and key stakeholders participated. This initiative aligns with the Government of Pakistan’s drive to enhance national cotton production, fostering collaboration among farmers and stakeholders to address and overcome cotton production challenges.

Key Highlights

Mr. Rasool Bux Junenjo, Additional Director General, of the Sindh Agriculture Department (Extension), provided an insightful overview of the department’s support initiatives. He emphasized sustainable agricultural practices, innovative technologies, and market-oriented strategies essential for enhancing cotton productivity and profitability.

Mr. Fritz Bohmler, SAWiE’s Strategy Director, introduced the company’s digital solutions and farm advisory services. He stated, “SAWiE aims to help farmers improve their income while enabling the textile fashion industry to access traceable cotton. By promoting regenerative agriculture, we enhance soil health, optimize irrigation use, and implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to combat climate change and strengthen farm resilience.”

Focus Areas for Cotton Productivity Enhancement

The seminar focused on key areas essential for increasing cotton yield and farmer income:

  • Input & Seed Quality Access: The importance of using pure, high-quality cotton seeds to enhance crop productivity and pest resistance was emphasized. -The need for a robust seed system to support farmers was also discussed.
  • Early Cotton Sowing Aligned with Climate Conditions: To mitigate climate change impacts, such as heavy monsoon rains and floods, research highlights the benefits of early spring sowing for improved cotton quality and yield.
  • Weather Updates: Real-time weather and market data are critical for informed decision-making, helping farmers optimize their farming strategies.
  • Market Linkage: Strengthening farmers’ access to input and output pricing and supply chains to ensure fair market opportunities.
  • Digital Solutions & Traceability: The need to develop a traceability system to reward farmers for quality and sustainable practices. SAWiE’s digital platform offers expert guidance on irrigation management, pest control, soil health, best agronomic practices, and farm-to-fashion traceability.

Cultural and Industry Perspective

Prof. Dr. Faiz Muhammad Shaikh from the University of Larkana highlighted Sindh’s rich cultural connection with cotton, from its traditional cottage industry to a modern, vibrant textile and fashion sector. He expressed deep appreciation for the Agriculture Extension Department, Sukkur, for mobilizing farmers and organizing the event. He extended gratitude to farmers, financial institutions, research organizations, and agricultural input providers for their invaluable participation.
