We are working with farmers’ rice clusters to enhance sustainability, reduce environmental impact, and improve crop yields. These clusters, which are geographical concentrations of interconnected farmers and agricultural enterprises, benefit from collaborative efforts in adopting innovative farming techniques.
We are supporting farmers in Sheikhupura to enhance the quality of Basmati rice through innovative, climate-smart practices. By introducing techniques like Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD), SAWIE helps reduce water consumption while improving soil health and grain quality. The integration of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and advanced farm advisory systems has enabled farmers to minimize pesticide use, resulting in cleaner, healthier crops. With SAWIE’s real-time data tools and expert guidance, Basmati rice from Sheikhupura is not only achieving higher yields but also meeting global sustainability standards, opening doors to premium markets.
We promote zero tillage, a practice that leaves the soil undisturbed, preserving soil structure and moisture. We are promoting water saving techniques including AWD, a water-saving method that reduces water usage and methane emissions in rice paddies. Additionally, laser land levelling is being facilitated to ensure uniform water distribution, reducing water wastage and improving crop yields.
Furthermore, SAWIE supports rice nursery sowing and transplantation techniques that optimize plant density and ensure healthy crop establishment. SAWIE field agronomist visit farmers on a weekly basis. The experts promote Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and find alternative methods for pests and disease control. SAWIE team only recommends certified and only approved pesticides to reduce Minimum Residue Level and aflatoxins.
